Orthotics Q & A

What are orthotics?

Orthotics are inserts that fit into your shoe to relieve foot pain and improve your mobility. Dr. Wright customizes the orthotic device you need to your individual foot shape and size.

Custom orthotics can be soft to provide you with more cushioned support to relieve discomfort in your legs, ankles, and feet. You may also benefit from rigid orthotics that use hard plastics or carbon fiber to better support your foot and ankle joints.

What conditions can orthotics treat?

You may be a candidate for orthotics if you experience persistent pain from foot or ankle conditions. Orthotics can also improve your overall mobility by providing more stability for your feet and ankles.

Dr. Wright can determine if custom orthotics are right for you by examining your feet and reviewing your symptoms. He may use onsite diagnostic technology, like X-rays, to confirm your diagnosis.

Some of the foot or ankle conditions that might benefit from the use of custom orthotics include:

  • Arthritis

  • Bunions

  • Flat feet

  • Heel spurs

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Achilles tendinitis

If you have a deformity in your foot, such as hammertoe, Dr. Wright may prescribe custom orthotics to correct it before recommending surgery.

What are the benefits of custom orthotics?

While there are a variety of over-the-counter orthotic products, these shoe inserts may not provide the same level of pain relief and support as a custom orthotic from Quantum Foot and Ankle Group, PC.

Dr. Wright designs a prescription orthotic to the specifications of your foot using 3D images to create the orthotic shoe or shoe insert. This customization ensures that your orthotic works with your unique foot movements and relieves pain in targeted areas.

You may need to wear orthotics in the long term to help you maintain the foot and ankle support you need for better mobility. Dr. Wright works with you closely to monitor your progress using orthotics. He can also suggest other nonsurgical treatments to help you stay active and pain-free.
